Goodyear tire blowout

Awesome day so far.


Traveling on I24E just outside of Nashville and the front passenger side tire started coming apart. Limped 4 miles to the next exit and a small truck stop. Waiting to get the tire changed.

More to the story

The bolts that hold the rotor assembly are mostly gone. Two left. Can't seem to add more pictures.

Out of pure curiosity, what is the build date on the back of the tire? Be ABSOLUTELY SURE to contact Goodyear. The damages will be covered if you hold their feet to the fire.

Date code on tire 3220. Tire issue was caused by rotor bolts coming out.

That's a new one to me! Never seen "Rotor Bolts" before.

These missing bolts actually caused the whole hub to be loose?

FYI that is not a "Blow Out", it's a tread separation. If you were to have traveled 4 miles on a blow out your good tire would have been toast.

You are correct. Not a tire blowout. My apologies to Goodyear. The "bolts" are the studs that hold the rotor to the hub. Not mechanically proficient so I still might have the terminology wrong. But the studs fell out somewhere along the road and last seem to have shredded the tire in front. The tire issue was a lucky break saving us from a complete wheel failure. Morryde is sending parts. The studs, seals and hub.

If I understand this the lug nuts that hold the wheel in place are connected to the hub and the rotor is a separate bolted on part. If so I think I would file a claim with GY. You need to go to a GY "OWNED" store and they can take care of you. You should get a new tire as it's so new and they WILL repair the damages. Bolts falling out IMHO not possible to damage that tire. I have had the tread come off mine also looking the same.

The missing bolts are a coincidence IMHO. I would be checking the other three wheels.

I am guessing you have the 9k axles?

This is getting old. RVIA??? I think GY knows best when they say this specific tire is good for 4,805# @ 125psi.

I guarantee the OP's axles weigh less than my two axles at 17,500#

It was just an informatory note.

Tire manufacturers have NOTHING to do with the fitment of tires onto a vehicle other than providing designated sizes with their specs for the vehicle manufacturer to make a choice from. The vehicle manufacturer has the sole authority for Original Equipment tire fitments.

The certification label on the axle may be 9000# but the vehicle manufacturer has the authority to set the vehicle GAWRs below the axle manufacturers certified maximum load. The GAWRs set by the vehicle manufacturer are certified on the vehicle certification label.

About 98% of all USA RV trailer manufacturers are members of the RVIA organization. Their recommendations are almost always followed by their members. The catch is; loss of membership.

When using the RVIA 10% load capacity reserve recommendation; 9000# GAWR axles will require tires with a minimum load capacity of 4950#. The recommendation is not grandfathered. Trailers vehicle certified before the the recommendation was implemented must comply with FMVSS standards which are lower than the RVIA recommendation.

By my eyes, "IF" those bolts were coming loose, that would cause a pretty good vibration as the tire assembly would now NOT be square to the axle..

That could cause the tread separation, Did you feel ANY vibration before the event? I would really think that if the bolts being that loose to cause that damage that you would feel it.. Just curious....

I was wondering if the rotor was actually loose or just missing bolts. Yes that could cause the issue also.

Looks like the bolts are a coincidence that was found when the tire separated

My husband was driving and I was following him in another vehicle. He did not feel anything odd at the time. I had him pull off the highway when shreds of tire started flying from the passenger side of the RV. We were one mile from an exit, so we slowly got off the highway since the tire was still holding air.


I have no idea what caused what but more problems have been discovered.



I'm just going to attach pictures. I don't want to explain I incorrectly.


To clarify, the tire that shredded was the tire in front of the tire where the rotor bolts had come out.


The rear tire also had the broken caliper housing.


Lastly, today we drove twenty miles to a campground and my husband realized that the brakes had been dragging. Waiting on new parts for the calipers on all the wheels from Dexter.

Call the GY property damage, get your claim started and don’t suggest the bolts caused the failure, leave it out completely.

You have two problems, a tire failure (and probably more in your future) and an ongoing Dexter Kodiak 9K axle disc brake failure.

AFAIK, our trailer was the first with the brake issues.
Dexter Kodiak has been working on and replacing parts on our rig since mid 2018. Most of the issues seem to have centered around those caliper retention clips and brake hose failures.

Goodyear so far has been pretty good at covering damage on the rigs. We had a blowout on our previous trailer, $6300 claim that was relatively easy to work through. I was also able to get GY to cover replacement of all the tires since I had already done so as I did not want to take a chance on another failure.

So you picked up your unit in April and by July you have caliper failure(s)? AND tire failure?? Wow How many miles do you think you've traveled with this trailer since you bought it?

I hope your luck changes, you were fortunate just the cap came off that tire! Did you get the parts directly from Dexter? I assume your husband put it all back together?

Good luck with your claim to Goodyear, they have a stellar reputation for standing behind their product!

I had my my 2020 unit picked up in May of 2019 from Morryde after getting the IS and disc brakes installed....

It had excessive heat and dragging, the pads were just about gone in the 600 mile tow home and the driver never checked once..

I pulled the wheels and could NOT remove 2 wheels as the studs were loose on the rotor and would not allow me to spin the lug... I had to get in there and place a small bead of weld just to get the lug nuts off... Once I removed all wheels, I had 2-3 studs loose and or fall out from each location....Dexter and Morryde worked with me and overnighted me all parts including 4 new rotor assemblies along with caliper assemblies....
I said this to show that any manufacturer can have a bad batch of parts, its how they make it right is what makes them a great company.

The brake issues was unrelated, turns out I had a bad Hydrastar pump as well.....
