ICE MAKER

I searched the forum with no luck .... Has anyone cleaned/sanitized the ice maker and its water line in the DT fridges? Mine has had an oder/taste problem since new that won't go away. Any ideas or suggestions welcomed.

is the ice maker the only line with smell/taste problems? Sounds odd if no other water faucets are having the same problem. Normally, mixing baking soda into the water tank and flushing everything once or twice; or chlorine in the correct concentration might do it.

It is just the ice maker. Tap water is OK without any smell or taste. That's the reason for my question. How in the world can you simply flush/sanitize the ice maker line and the maker itself? I'm at a loss!

Yes we had the same problem with our icemaker and at the same time we could not pump water from the holding tank while dry camping. Found that the line was full of wood shavings etc. Once this line was cleared we could use the water pump and there was no ODOR OR BAD TASTE in the ice cubes.

You could put some bicarb water/chlorine water in the water tank, plug in to shore power and let the icemaker cycle from the tank 4-6 times. That would flush the lines and the tray. 'course you can't be hooked to a water hose at the same time, or it will fill from the hose I would think.

Have you determined if it IS the water OR is it just the ice that has the smell?

Ha! Right now it's a moot (sp?) point. DT's wonderful engineers run the water line right next to the evaporator tank (which naturally gets very hot on the summer - or any other time for what its worth) and the water line now has a hole in it! <sigh>

In our 2004 Alfa we used to have, I battled a small water leak under the frig with the ice maker (had 2 frigs). Just before trading it in and after the notification of the Dometic recall, I finally figured our what was wrong. The clear plastic water line was encased in a stffer black plastic tube but it was run to close to the hot area of the frig and caused the water line to cook, become brittle and start to leak inside the enclosing black tube!

Let the dealer know the frig needed the recall done and a new water line.

Guess I'll have to go check out my MS, just in case. At least in the Alfa's case, I don't believe Alfa had anything to do with the location of the line, just part of the frig unit from Dometic.

Regarding the clear plastic icemaker water line, the problem is not just "placement". Dometic uses a very poor quality piece of material for that installation. Over a relatively short period of time, it will just crack and disintegrate. That is what happened to ours. The technician that did our repair, under warranty, stated that he saw this problem often. He did give me the choice of installing Dometic's parts, furnished under warranty, or he could install a better/more permanent line for $3 to $4 more. I did choose the better line, of course.

Actually, IMHO, it would be better to remove the icemaker from the fridge, for more useable freezer space, and buy a counter-top icemaker. But I haven't convinced the DW of the value of doing that yet. lol lol

I just had the water line to the ice maker replaced, in my opinion, the reason for the plastic line failure is that the white wire that runs the length is a heated wire to prevent freezing, this wire is hot 24/7 as long as the fridge is on. Per my dealer the heat destroys the plastic, he recomended that I unplug the black wire that powers this unless very low temp. is expected. My dealer said this is a common failure with this setup.
