We've experienced reception problems while trying to use our cell phones at camp grounds. Has anyone ever tried voip phone systems? I'm not sure if it would be worth it or not, but if we're in an area that has internet, but poor cell phone reception, voip might be a good choice. I'm curious if anyone has tried this.

I tried it and used a service that provided voip. You could dial a number and talk to them like you were on the phone. In our case we were using a satellite internet system and that caused a delay in conversations due to system lag. It is usable but we were not in any place without cell coverage much so we dropped it. It was an unnecessary cost but it did give us phone capability when we were in Mexico without having to get a mexican phone service.

Cell phone

We have had Verizon since 1987 (Pac Bell/AirTouch then Verizon) and have been fulltime since 2000 have seen a large change in service in the time frame the last few years crossng coast to coast about 6 times on major roads from Canada to Mex. only found 3 places with slow to no service. Most providers are sharing the sites for cell service these days.

Was in Priest Gulch CG north of Cortez, CO, last summer--no cell service.
Every day, an couple set up their laptop on a table near the office and spoke to the grandkids using SKYPE. It worked real good, far as I could tell, and they had webcams, so they could see each other.

We have intermittant cell service even with a Booster and antenna.

But DH just uploaded SKYPE and found fair reception. But we had to use CG wifi since our internet service is slower and not always reliable.

Communication through phones is difficult when you're camping in mountainous areas. There is not much signal. I haven't tried the VoIP phone systems, but this might help: http://voip-phone-systems.tmcnet.com/
