Breakaway cable failure

I forgot to post this after our last campout.

When we got to our last campsite I started to unhook and noticed that the loop at the hitch end of our breakaway cable was no longer there. The end of it had pulled out of the clamp that crimped it to create the loop. Apparenty some firewood that was in the back had fallen onto the cable and lodged itself down removing the slack that is normally in the cable. Now the real problem was that the loop that attached to the pin in the breakaway switch had also hooked itself around the back edge of the side of the pin box. If you pin box doesn't have a 'ledge' on the bottom edge, no problem. So when I turned instead of the pin coming out of the breakaway the pressure pulled the front loop apart. Now that Ive remembered this I am going to tape or zip tie the loop at the breakaway switch so it cant loop itself around the hitch edge.
The worst part of this is that I didnt even know it happened until I saw the loop undone.
